Materials of Kimono

Materials of Kimono

Generally, kimonos are made from silk. It is because silk has good capacity of making clothes breathe well. And kimonos made from silk have a power of controlling moisture so we can stay comfortable both in a hot day and in a cold day. But silk kimonos are difficult to maintain. If you make some mistakes when you care kimonos, it will become useless even if it was only a little mistake.

There are some kimonos made from cotton. Cotton kimono’s feature is price and simplicity of caring. We can wash them with washing machine. And they breathe very well.

And the last is polyester kimono. Their biggest advantage is that we can clean them by laundry very easily. In days gone by, they are said cheap-looking, uncomfortable from static electricity, but now technique improved and polyester kimono got popularity.

HOW TO WEAR YUKATA

                    How to wear yukata

yukata is old and characteristic clothes in Japan. so how to wear yukata is very different from how to wear current clothes. and even Japanese usually don`t know how to. now I introduce how to wear yukata simply.

  1. Find your favorite Yukata.

  2. Put the Yukata on. Flip the long sleeves back over your arms, so that they won't be in your way.

  3. While one hand is holding both sides of the fabric together in front of your body, try to locate the center line of the garment (where the fabrics are sewed together)on the back of your body using the other hand. Fix the garment to the center.

  4. Open up the garment and pull it up to the ankle level.

  5. Bring the left side of the garment to the front and decide the length and width.

  6. Open up the left side while keeping the length and bring the right side to the front. Decide the length. Bottom corner of the right side of the garment should be about 4" from the ground.

  7. Keep the right side garment and bring the left side on top of it. Decide the length. The bottom corner of the left side garment should be about 2" from the ground.

  8. Use Koshi-Himo and tie the garment around the waist. Make sure to tie tightly to avoid the garment getting loose. Tack the Koshi-Himo in.

  9. Find the side pockets, stick both hands, and pull the extra fabric over Koshi-Himo. Make sure to do the front and the back. *This layer around the waist is called Ohashori. Ohashori is supposed to show below the Obi.

  10. Fix the shape of Ohashori and tie the second Koshi-Himo right below the bust. This one does not have to be as tight as the first one. Tack the Koshi-Himo ends in.

  11. If you are slim build, you may have extra fabric on the side of the upper body. At the side pockets, pull the back fabric to the front and the pull back the front fabric over it to hide the extra fabric. This will make a clean side look.

  12. And now you are done! Make sure to Tie an Obi around the waist for the complete Yukatalook.

IT IS POPULAR FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
Since YUKATA is inexpensive and easy to put it on, the Japanese receive it naturally. it is popular to from children to elderly people. Generally it's made of white or indigo blue cloth whose pattern is a flower or a grasses in autamn so that it looks cool.
But thesedays dressmaker's shop which is popular to teenagers begins to produce and sell it, its design gradually becomes colorful and loud. Ones which is white or indigo blue is called "a classic",while ones whose pattern is colorful and up-to-date is called "a brand yukata".

WITH A PUBLIC BATH'S PREVAILING
The origin of yukata is "yukatabira" on which aristocrats put lest they would scalded themselves  when they took a bath. "Katabira" is hemp clothes. At the time, cotton is very expensive, so thin cloth as an underwear is made of hemp.
In the latter EDO period, as the amount of cotton's production was increasing and it prevails in ordinary people, the material of yukatakatabira changed hemp into cotton. While the number of times when they wear it was increasing, they called it "yukata" for short. Now we come to wear it not merely after taking a bath but also always in summer.
